Today, Snorri checks out the love letter to the Everly Brothers’ timeless Songs Our Daddy Taught Us that combines the talents of Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones. brushes with greatness: chapter 6
It began as a lark. I think.
I had received a call from a friend I’ll refer to as Steve. No, Neil. Let’s call him Neil. Anyway, the city was trembling with excitement over the upcoming concert by teen idol Britney Spears. Neil insisted I pull some strings to get us a pair of tickets to the show. The way he figured it the two of us should go, the better to understand this latest pop music phenomenon.
So we did, leaving a party hosted by a respected local authority on roots and blues music in order to do so. “Sorry,” we said to all present, “but we have to get to the Britney Spears show.” After we’d left, I’m told, the guest of honour asked where we were really going. Sadly, he was not completely surprised to hear we were going to the Britney Spears show. Continue reading

the delicate art of booing
Sunday’s the day. Freshly healed from an injury that kept him out of action for last week’s loss to his former team, Detroit Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson is set to return to Ottawa. It’s good news for the Senators, as the Red Wings appear to be the only team our troubled local heroes can reliably beat. And it’s good news for Ottawans, who will finally have a chance to greet the prodigal winger and to celebrate his contributions to your Ottawa Senators.
There will be a tribute to the former captain whose ship has since his abandonment struggled to navigate choppy waters. Expect thunderous applause. And booing. Continue reading
turn up the internet
Me again. But then, as this is my blog I suppose there’s little need for additional introduction.
Just a quick note to let you know I will return to CKCU this afternoon (evidently the station survived last Wednesday’s fill-in, even with Walter Brennan’s recitation of Old Shep). Tune in at 4 p.m. for one hour of music, as I attempt to fill the stylish shoes of Chris Ikonomopoulos for one week only on his dandy show Turn Up the Radio. So far, I’ve yet to decide what I’ll be playing; I have, however, decided what I will not be playing. Specifically, I will not be playing this: Continue reading

both kinds now
It’s been a while.
Well, maybe not that long, now that I think about it, but I’ll be returning to the airwaves today at 1:30 p.m. to fill in for the exquisite Mr. Dick Alta Vista on the CKCU program Both Kinds of Music.
It’ll be two hours of… something. Music, mostly. There will be no — I repeat, no — begging for money. Listeners to 93.1 gave generously during the station’s funding drive earlier this month, so we won’t mention money again for another 50 weeks or so. Deal? Now, to plan a show. Tune in, won’t you? I’ll be taking requests; though, I probably won’t play them.
