knee the world

The wind it is howling. And the snow is outrageous.

But as you grudgingly accept on this, another sunny day, that winter weather ain’t going nowhere, you can perhaps draw comfort from the thought that it could be worse.

You could be Bono.

The U2 frontman has had a difficult few weeks. There was the near-miss airplane incident, which saw the Sunday Bloody Sunday singer’s luggage (mostly pairs of sunglasses) embark on an unscheduled airdrop over Berlin. Then, earlier this week, there was what has been described as a “high-energy bicycle accident.” It was high energy, presumably, because Bono was involved. Subsequent accounts of the bizarre cycling accident have reported Bono may be out of circulation for some time. May I suggest, Mr. ‘no, recuperating at Big Pink, maybe jamming in the basement with a few old friends? Continue reading

back to the country

In the future, Ottawa’s history will be divided into two distinct epochs: pre- and post-New Country 94.

True, some were shocked by the demise of BOB-FM. And one suspects Corey Hart will feel its loss in his next royalty cheque.

songs for the new depression

“Canada’s king of creep.”

That banner headline adorns the front page of the “Me” section of today’s paper. The accompanying story is, surprisingly, not about the former host (and co-creator, his lawyers will tell you) of a CBC Radio show. Rather, it’s a profile of an overrated Canadian film director.

Presumably, the page was laid out before mid-week. Few will deny that Canada has since acquired a new king of creep.

And just in time for Hallowe’en. Continue reading

toward a more perfect collection

Yes, I’m still here. Or, rather, I have returned.

Where have I been, you ask? Where haven’t I been. (Here, mostly.)

For this blogger, September was a month of hiking around Great Britain. And by hiking, I mean taking trains and taxis to the nearest pub. Good times. Continue reading
