brushes with greatness: chapter 2

“Can you do three features for an insert we’re doing on the roots of Canadian rock music?”

The question was posed by a relic from the past called an arts editor at the Sun. Something to do with a Juno-related retrospective that would run in papers across the country. Or maybe not. What I do recall is that I was given but a few days to put together these feature-length retrospectives on the history of rock and roll in Canada. With first-hand accounts. So time was a factor.

I set about looking up contacts for classic Canadian-Content rockers. I found a few. Not enough to legitimately put together three feature-length pieces, y’understand, but enough to get started. In the end, I offered up an interview I’d done with Les Emmerson about the birth of The Five Man Electrical Band, and which I’d intended to save for another project. But one down. Two to go. Snorri’s album reviews

April is shaping up to be a good month to invest in vinyl. Tomorrow, April 7, the Ottawa Community Record Show returns for its eighth edition, at St. Anthony’s Banquet Hall, 523 Anthony St. It’s another opportunity for collectors to shore up embarrassing gaps in their Kix and Hawkwind sections. A good thing, indeed. Later this month, vinyl geeks the world over will again rejoice with the arrival of Record Store Day: Saturday, April 20. In honour of this year’s edition, a number of nifty limited-edition reissues are set to come our way, including a four-LP edition of Flaming Lips’ impenetrable Zaireeka (alas, to hear it properly you will have to invest in an additional three turntables), a symphonic Calexico release and a cool 10th-anniversary edition of White Stripes’ Elephant — on red, white and black vinyl, no less.

Wow, Elephant turns 10! Excuse enough, perhaps, to head out to the yard and dig up that original vinyl copy, eh, Snorrs? How’s it feel to crank up some White Stripes? Continue reading

brushes with greatness: chapter 1

Word today has it that KISS will once again grace us with its presence, July 25, at Scotiabank Place. And by KISS, we are talking 50 per cent of the real KISS. For while the rock show will as always be big, original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley have once again not been invited to rock and roll for even part of the night.

So, in honour of those exiled KISS alumni, I present the first installment in a series of true tales from the rock and roll world. First-hand encounters with some of the great musical figures of our time. Or, if not great, then at least pretty darn good. Continue reading

delayed response

I’ve been involved in only a handful of conference-call interviews or reporters’ scrums. Each time, I have come armed with questions. Sometimes I even got to ask them.

With Joan Jett, I was allotted a generous total of two questions. During a Corel Centre (or was it the Palladium?) gathering at the feet of a very approachable Alanis Morissette, I chose to ask no questions. Why? The tone of the media love-in was set early on by a gushing question from one local reporter: “Did you bring a ‘special’ friend to town with you?” I decided my two prepared questions were too good for this crowd; though, I suspect, Alanis would have welcomed them. And as for Madonna‘s press conference in Toronto, I knew chances of my getting in a question amid the MuchMusic and YTV personalities were slim to none. Continue reading
